Vuescan: setting neutral point with clear film base?

Just a quick question:

At Vuescan, I know we can shoot a white card and right click on it to
set the neutral point for manual color balance. Can I do it with clear
film base and get reliable result?

If yes, does it work for both slide and negative?

If no, why?

thanks,

On slides, it'll remove the cast from the whites (make sure the area
you click on is not clipped), on negatives you are actually clicking
on the shades (after inversion). Negative film is better corrected by
adjusting the exposure levels of the R, G, and B channels, and then by
clicking the (inverted in the preview) whites.
