Vuescan demo won't preview on on Scan Dual IV

I'm considering buying Vuescan for my Scan Dual IV but I can't get a
preview scan - it does a focus pass but when it comes to do the
preview the neg holder doesn't advance. The resulting preview is what
you'd expect: vertical bands, as per the same cross-section of the neg
reproduced several thousand times. This doesn't happen on Scan, but
Preview would be handy. It doesn't happen with the Minolta software.
I have had the same result with every version since SD IV support was
added, right up to the current 8.04. Has anyone else seen this, or do
I have a dud scanner? I don't think this is the same problem as the
'colour banding' issue, if I understand those posts correctly: I
thought they were getting an image but with bands of colour cast (?).

Hello Andy,

This is new to me: Vuescan goes through all the stages it is supposed
to as far as I can judge, preview included. I had preview working
right from the start with Vuescan. There are some weird lock-ups of
the scanner possible. Have you tried to throw away the ini file and
start afresh? Follow the procedures recommended in the user manuals.

The problems I have are:
1- the color banding (no solution available yet)
2- autofocus not working (I have to use manual focus)

I use Vuescan for B/W only now: I like the RAW format possibilities
that Vuescan has: output as well as input. Multiple sample doesn't
give useful results for B/W either, but then I suppose one doesn't
need it.

Are you planning to do color negatives/positives?
