VueScan and different film types

Hi - I am relatively new to the world of film scanning. I have a Nikon
Coolscan III and purchased VueScan (Intel) because of favourable
comments found on the web. I have found it a little tough to master in
the beginning because of all the options, but seem to find my way
around quite well now.

One of the things I am still struggling with, is what film type to
select in the Color tab for a given film. Clearly not all films are
present and it seems to be a little trial-and-error to see which works
well. I find this difficult and time consuming because of the options
that are available.

Would it be possible to advice from experience what works best for
(some of my current favourites):

- FUJI Neopan 1600
- FUJI Neopan 400
- FUJI Acros 100

Does it seem to make sense to collect these 'best practices' and make
them available to other users of VueScan?

Thanks a lot for all thoughts!

Erik

I find the best results from leaving everything at generic and making
adjustments with image editor. The important thing is to capture the
full range of densities in the image.

These are B/W films, aren't they? Unfortunately Vuescan has no generic
B/W mode as for color negatives, but this does not seem to matter. I
would do the following:

Scan with Media Type B/W negative. For better control you might want to
read the advanced workflow suggestions in the manual, but this is of
less relevance here. In the color tab set for B/W vendor 'Generic'.

The only options for B/W brand is 'color' but this does not matter
since input type is B/W. With generic negative type vuescan only
inverts the image and does not try to correct anything.

Choose color balance neutral and set white and black point to 0%. This
avoids clipping of highlights or shadows. Increase values only, if you
want to enhance contrast and you don't care much about shadow detail. A
better way is to use a s-shaped curve in your image editor.
