Hi - Looking for a VU meter like we used to see on cassette recorders to
monitor sound card output.
TIA

Thank you. I did Google for it before making my request here, but
none will work with Windows Media Player. The *one* that does run
alongside WMP causes severe distortion, probably because of conflict
with my Creative Extigy sound card.

Creative didn't include a recorder? Most of which have a VU meter even
if rudimentary. What is it you want to do?

Kinda silly, but I have a three-computer, seven monitor setup in my den,
where we often party. I have over 17,000 mp3's, and allow friends to search
for and play their favorites. Two monitors will be running slide shows,
another WMP, then the search window, etc. I'd like to have an analog VU
meter on another screen - just for the visual effect. All in all, it's a
pretty cool setup - including a bitchin' sound system.

Sounds nice. No idea why a VU meter would distort WMP sound though...I
would think the data is going WMP>VU meter>card. Meter is checking
gain, the card is just changing the digital to analog. You might try
changing your player...I have never had any distortion with Winamp and
any program (numerous) that I have used that has a VU meter.

I really dislike the WinAmp graphics, but haven't fully explored the skins
available.

The Creative Extigy 'card' is external, in a breakout box, and is connected
via USB. The bundled software for it includes a player and recorder that
looks like it was designed for/by kids.

Extigy: http://www.techspot.com/reviews/hardware/extigy/index.shtml
Player: http://www.techspot.com/reviews/hardware/extigy/extigy3.shtml

This has become a challenge, and I'd like to resolve it by this Saturday
night.

There are tons. Personally, I avoid Winamp 5.x in favor of 2.x, no need
for the new "features". Old versions are available at Winamp heaven.

That might be it...the USB. Got on board sound? Try it.

Probably was. On both counts. Never use any of my Creative soft.
