Hello ! I have a question about VPNs and I hope this NG is the most
appropriate . I know most of the things about VPN on a threory but I have
never needed to establish such connection and now I need it and ,of
course,some more help.

I have clients - small business . The have 2 offices which are in the same
city but in a long distances . They use accountancy programs and they now
want to share the data of these specific programs .

We have found two ways of sharing but I think the VPN one will be the most
appropriate . Now , can you just explain me what VPN is exactly , I mean more
details . Then , can you tell us what I can do for them . How do a establish
this connection so it would be secure , the data is secure and no hacker will
be able to see them . They have telephones in the both offices so can I use
dial-up connections to estblish the VPN connections between these two
computers in the two different offices . Does both computers need to online
before establishing this connection and how this can happen exactly . Can be
use another i-net connections and how do I configure them.

Can you also think about another way of sharing these . Just to note that
these computers are both Windows 98 but I think it would be almost the same
if they were XP . What firewall would be most appropriate in your opinion .
Thanks very very much .

Ok , I reread my post and I find it ...hmm , a little bit unclearn . So just
ignore it and read the new one :)

Basically I wanted to know can we use dial-up i-net connections for vpn (
assuming the answer is yes , but just for sure)
Because of the fact I have never used vpn before , how can the host pc,
which I want to connect to , will understand that someone want to connect to
it .
Both computers which are remotely are Windows 98 (not se) - so is it
possible to establish it in so old OS , or we should find more appropriate
new Windowses
And what firewalls we can use (routes with NAT/SPI) or what

Thanks in advanced , very much :)

Yes, you should be able to setup a VPN over the Internet connecting two sites. You may have many options. If you want to use windows as VPN host, it is better to have windows 2000 or above. Or you can setup router to router VPN if both sites have routers. These links may help,
