I have a client and I had to set up a VPN connection to
their server. I have not used VPN before but got it set
up. I did this through network connections in XP Pro.

Well, whenever I am connected to the vpn I cannot browse
the internet or send or receive emails on my normal ISP
connection. I can browse my network but can't get to the
internet.

Any idea on why that is and if it can be stopped? It is
either trying to use that VPN connection as my internet
connection or for some reason the vpn has just taken
priority over my normal internet connection.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is and will always be the case. When you establish the VPN, your
system is no longer part of the ISP's network. You have become a networked
PC on your client's network and they may not be using the same ISP.

You would need to disconnect and do you Internet stuff (browsing and email)
and re-connect to VPN after.

In my experience that is normal VPN behaviour.

Tarpon:

It is a security feature. Check with your client before you bypass it.
To disable it open the VPN connectoid, uncheck "Use default gateway on
remote network" on the Advanced TCP/IP settings page.
