Volume license?

D

David Casey

I recently bought several copies of what was described as "Windows XP
Professional OEM". What I got were copies of Windows XP Professional with
a volume license key printed on a sticker attached to the back of the CD
sleeve and a mailing label which said "Windows XP FULL VERSION" stuck over
the "For distribution with a new Panasonic PC only" sticker on the front of
the book. There is no COA (due to the volume license key I am guessing).

Anyway, the company I bought them from has agreed to take back the unopened
ones (I luckily only opened one), but is this type of sale legal? I
thought a volume license meant you had to use it within your own
organization and couldn't resell them to just anyone out on the street?

Just curious, I don't want to have Microsoft beating down my door simply
because someone didn't mention something on their website (there was no
mention at all of the volume license key being used here... I wouldn't have
bought them then).

David;
Sounds like they are illegally selling Windows XP.
Insist on a total refund.

Yes, that's kind of what I was thinking. The refund isn't going to be a
problem per the company. But I will also let Microsoft know of what is
going on. Thanks!

Sound like your order got mixed up. Some places are allowed to sell
Volume license if your order at least five copies. Then they sent
you the wrong cds for the volume license.

Anything but legal. To use Volume license products you need to take out
such a license with Microsoft, and agree to procedures and audits.
These disks are quite probably pirated ones - and the keys would not be
accepted if you then wanted to install service packs.

To see if the disks would indeed work, I installed the one I opened on my
laptop which never really gets any use anyway. It installed perfectly and
required no activation. But I didn't plug into the network here in the
house and try to download any updates since I was thinking the copies were
sold to me "illegally" and I didn't want to have a representative from my
local law enforcement agency knocking on my door. ;-)

Either way, they're all boxed back up and later on this afternoon I'm
heading out to the post office to send them back from where they came.

Relax. No LE representative would have come knocking on your door.
MS has much bigger fish to fry than the home user installing one copy
of pirated software. They usually go after the people who sell large
volumes of said software. It is just not cost efficient to go after
you - the cost of court vs the cost of the software? You do the math!

You would not have had that. But probably would have found that if you
tried installing a Service pack it would fail.
