Sounds like you need to reinstall your sound card driver.

Can you still listen the sounds? If yes, then follow the procedure:

1. Click Start - Settings - Control Panel (or Start - Control Panel)
2. Open Sound, Speech and Audio Devices (or Sond and Audio Devices)
3. Make a Check Mark on "Place volume icon in the taskbar".

If this option is grey out (disabled) that means you need to reinstall your
sound drivers from the Motherboard CD that comes up with your PC.

Let us know, if this information is useful to you.

i'm sorry I should have been a little more distinct in what I said. My volume
works and everything, I can hear like normal, but before whenever I turned my
volume UP or DOWN, there would be an indicator on the bottom of my screen
showing the BARS for how high or low my volume is, like you like you know
when you turned up or down your stereo, there would be a volume indicator?
that's what i meant. Now, when i turned my volume up or down, the indicator
doesnt show up anymore. thank you and sorry for the confusion.

This is usually a product of either
a) the sound card software drivers
and/or
b) the drivers/program files for multimedia keyboards

You should check the manuals for either of these - It is NOT a
facility of WindowsXP.

I think you're talking about MultiMedia Keyboard. Are you increasing the
volume from your Keyboard's MultiMedia Buttons. If yes, then you have to look
around for your keyboard drivers. They have been removed or being disabled.
See, your Start -All Programs and check if there is something matching
programentry with your keyboard. Start the program and increase or decrease
the volume. If it works that means the program is disable to Auto Start.
Click Start - Run - type MSCONFIG and press enter. On the Startup tab check
an entry matching with your keyboard program and make a tick mark (if
uncheck).

If there is no keyboard program then check for a Floppy or CD that comes
with your keyboard and try to install the drivers again. If you've nothing
then try to download the drivers from the Keyboard manufacturer web-site and
do a Google.
