the volume control icon on systray used to just pop up, when i double
clicked it, with a box to check to mute (or un-mute) now it opens the whole
volume control "board"....i've tried system restore but that doesn't
help....thanks for any help

Double-clicking has always (for me) brought up the volume control panel.
Try SINGLE clicking on the volume tray icon. That brings up just the
popup volume meter (which has the mute checkbox).
