I have been cleaning out the hard drive and I think I have mistakenly
deleted the volume control, the one that has the icon at the bottom right of
the desktop, the volume still works but eg I cannot mute it or have access
to the adjustment controls. My win xp is registered and I have the serial
number but no CD disc.

thanks

Put the speaker volume control icon back on the Taskbar:-

To place the volume control icon back next to the clock, follow these steps:
1. Open the Control Panel from the Start menu.
2. Click the Sounds Speech and Audio Devices icon. (Or, depending how your
Control Panel is set up, click the Sounds and Audio Devices icon.)
3. Click "Adjust the system volume."
4. Click in the box marked "Place volume icon in the taskbar."
5. Click the OK button, and the little Speaker icon appears next to the
clock, where it should be.

Done that and it states control volume must be installed, go to add/remove
programmes.
This states cannot execute SndVol32,exe, which then asks for CD.

You really do need the CD, if not now, sometime in the future perhaps.

Borrow a CD.

Place your XP CD in then go to Start/Run and type in:
EXPAND -R X:\I386\powrprof.dl_ C:\Windows\System32

Once done: Go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 stobject.dll

If the above hasn't helped and you have received this error:

Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume
Control program has not been installed. To install it use Add/Remove
Programs in Control Panel.

To resolve this issue, extract a new copy of Sndvol32.exe from the Windows
XP CD to the system_root \System32 folder on your computer's hard disk. To
do this, follow these steps:

Start/Run/CMD. In the command prompt window type:

X: (where X is your CD Drive letter)
CD \I386

Then use the expand command:
expand -r sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32

Note: This assumes XP is installed on C: and that its installed in the
Windows folder. If not, you'll need to adjust the command accordingly.
Additionally, this must be an installable version of XP, not a "recovery
CD".
