VOLUME CONTROL DISAPEARED

Using XP Home on a Dell computer. Suddenly the volume control on the task
bar disappeared and going to the CONTROL PANEL the Sound Icon window is not
active. I can´t click on the controls or the work VOLUME.

What shows in Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers?
Is your device listed and/or are any conflicts presently shown?

It's rather difficult to guess what the problem might be just from those
symptoms, but I have two questions/suggestions that might help you pinpoint
the problem. First, do you have on-board sound or a sound card? Second, if
you do have a sound card, have you checked to make sure that it's still
functioning? That is, what do you see if you go to device manager and look it
up?
