Volume control being adjusted automatically

I'm having trouble with my microphone when I try to use it with Skype. The
sound quality starts out fine and then it seems like the computer
automatically adjusts it lower and lower so that the recipient of my call can
no longer hear me. When I try to adjust it back the volume control slides
lower but not higher. I found a solution on the help menu for Windows 2000
but I can't figure out how to make adjustments for Windows XP Professional,
which is what I am using.

I have to admit that I don't even know how to begin to answer that question.
My computer knowledge is pretty limited.

this is the cause of the problem in w2k as found in the help menu:

This issue occurs because the value of the following subkey is 0 instead of 1
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000\Enable HW Volume Control

there are then instructions on how to change the 0 to a 1, however when I
looked in the same location in regedit...there was no function that said
"enable HW Volume Control"...so I got stumped as to where to go next or what
to do.
