-----------
What is VNC
-----------
VNC stands for Virtual Network Computing.
It is remote control software which allows you to view and interact
with one computer (the "server") using a simple program (the "viewer")
on another computer anywhere on the Internet. The two computers don't
even have to be the same type, so for example you can use VNC to view
an office Linux machine on your Windows PC at home.

/CoMa - I like UltraVNC and TightVNC

Another VNC based program to keep an eye on is Gencontrol,
http://www.gensortium.com/products/gencontrol.html .
The interesting part about this program is that it does not need the
remote computer to have the software already installed. It depends on
RPC and Administrative shares to copy and start the service before
connecting and stop and delete the service after disconnect. Which
meants it works on NT and above.

As it is right now it is not very convenient to use because it uses
the current user account to connect to the remote computer so if your
account does not exist on the remote computer you have to log out and
log in to an account that exist on both computers. I emailed them and
ask for a way to use an alternate account other than the current user
to connect to the remote computer and they said that they are already
planning to implement it in the next version. Since it uses the Tight
VNC core, it should remain free.

I've been using RealVNC (i.e., WinVNC) for ages and really like it for the
most part. Didn't know UltraVNC existed. I'll have to try it out. The file
transfer sounds interesting if it's fast.

Still missing integral encryption. :-(

Isn't that what SSH is for? Why integrate it when something else does that
part better, and is likely to have fewer bugs than if they tried to write
their own, not to mention the development time it would steal away from the
core product.
