VLOOKUP returns formula not the result

My vlookup function returns the actual formula in the
destination cell, and not the actual result. When you
click on the formula bar the correct result shows in the
vlookup dialogue box but does not show in the destination
cell - instead showing the whole formula. In the past if
I clicked in and out of the cell it 'fix' itself and show
the actual result, but no longer! I have similar vlookup
formulas in adjacent columns and they work fine and are
formatted exaclty the same.
I appreciate any help on this puzzling proplem.

your cell is probably formated as 'Text'. Goto 'Format -
Cells' and choose 'General'. after this re-enter the
formula

if you have checked the option settings AND the cell is not formated as
'Text' this should work
