vlc icons on updates

Hi, ya know the VLC media player, well on three media player updates
on windows2000 in add\remove programs it has the VLC player icon. And
on XP it seemed to do that as well.

Can I change these back to what they should be.

Also I am reinstalling XP and would like to know what media file
association setting could I leave out when installing VLC to avoid
this in the first place.

Thanks for comments.

Yes? And ... ?

What "should" they be? And what are they now?

The Media file association has 'nothing' to do with the number of entries
for VLC in the Add/Remove programs list.

The Add/Remove programs list may have interpreted 'each' instance of a VLC
upgrade/update as a separate program.
Even though it may be an update/upgrade for VLC, that's not necessarily how
Add/Remove programs see's it.
To ensure you only have 'one' instance of VLC in Add/Remove programs you
need to uninstall the old version from Add/Remove programs first.

What Media file associations you leave out when installing VLC is entirely
up to you.
For example you may want VLC to only open .mp4 video files and leave
everything else to what is currently the default Media Player.
In that case you would untick everything except .mp4.
On the other hand you may prefer VLC to play most Media by default.
Given it's ease of use compared to the behemoth WMP that is to be
recommended.

Best
Paul.

I think the issue happens after I uninstall media player, it does
leave the media player updates.

But then when I install vlc it changes the media player update icons

This might do it for me for my system that already has this,
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/appicons.htm

Anyway I think the issue maybe is the file types of the files they
are. And since media player has been removed VLC took them over, at
least with the icon.

Anyway I am thinking with the freshly installed XP I have I could
uncheck the .extension(s)
and see if they still change or don't change.

If somebody could drop me a bone of what these MP updates extensions
are? I was thinking .bin

Why did you uninstall media player ? As media player isn`t there the
icons will stay as VLC .
