Vital programs not working after SP2 installation.

Hi,

I have XP Pro and recently dowloaded and installed SP2, and since then
Windows Media Player (v9 and 10) and System Restore do not function. I would
use System Restore to go back to before the SP upgrade, however I can't.

When I open WMP, it appears, but then it just hangs and stops responding. It
was v9 originally, so I thought if I upgraded it to v10 it might fix the
problem - no such luck however.

When I try and open System Restore, the computer thinks for a while, then
stops as if it hadn't been told to execute anything, the program never
appears. No matter how many times I try and open it, from the Start Menu
shortcut and the actual exe, nothing appears, the computer simply begins to
do something, then stops.

Any help with this would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Hello Maestro. Some questions...What is Your system manufacturer?
What updates have you recieved after sp2 was installed? Look in add/remove
programs.
Can you access accessories/system tools/system information?
Is system restore turned on? Look in my comp properties system restore tab.
Can you get any further microsoft updates?
Can you access user accounts in control pannel ?
Have you tried uninstalling sp2?

Hey,

The computere is a laptop, an HP compaq nx9010. It is an ex-company laptop
about 1.5 to 2 years old. I will format it eventually but I am unable to in
the near future because the current information may be useful. Of course, I
could back it up, but the computer would best be kept in its current
condition, minus the problems of course.

It is interesting because no sooner had I written the original post (up
top), I exited my browser (firefox), and System Restore had popped up
working. Well, I thought to myself "hallelujah, it's fine again". However,
the only restore points that exist now are all after the SP2 upgrade, so
that's no good.
So of course I was very annoyed, but then I tried Media Player and it worked
fine. "Hallelujah" I thought again, cos I figured that if it works fine,
there is no need for me to format or use system restore. BUT... I thought
just to make sure I'll reboot the computer and make sure everything works
okay - it didn't! It went back to screwing me around.

So, it seems that Media Player is temperamental - when I boot up it refuses
to work, however after I have been using other programs it works fine. I'm
not sure if it is any particular program(s), but that's what it does.

As for your questions Inhomepcservice, yes to all of them except for the
last - uninstalling SP2. I would rather not, because some of the problems I
had immediately after installing it are fine now, and I do not want to risk
getting them again.

I would not suggest you uninstall sp2 and leave it that way . How ever I
would suggest an uninstall of sp2. also remove all programs addons etc. Look
for anything that looks sus in add/remove prog's back to a bare operating
system if necessary.(Trial by elimination )run all the spywear progs you can
start with spybot ,ad-aware,microsoft antispyware,Spy
Sweeper,NoAdware,XoftSpy,Spyware Doctor,are just some.. run a virus scan I
prefer "vet" or "mcaffee".
run " MSCONFIG " remove all on the startup tab ,If it is simply a conflict
this often removes the offender. Then reinstall sp2.
