vista xp networking

I have installed a network with a router and one wired pc with vista on it
and one
wireless pc with Xp on it.
Both computers have access to my DSL modem and can connect to the internet.
The Xp computer can see the Vista PC and copy and use the files that i have
put
in the public folder.

BUT the Vista pc cannot access the files on the XP PC. The XP PC is seen on
the
Vista PC in the Network window but when you try to access this PC you get
this
message:

PC-2 is not accessible. You Might not have permission to use this network
resource.
Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access
permission
Access is denied.

I want to be able to get the files off the XP pc and copy them to the Vista
PC
using the network.

The 2 pcs are in the same workgroup, network location type is set to private,
File sharing is turned on.

I assumed that you got the Access Denied message when you attempt to access a
specific folder on the XP machine, from the Vista machine.

When you create a share, you are required to provide permission to users who
are allowed to access the share. The permission settings can be configured on
the 'Sharing' tab in the folder properties window, through the 'Permissions'
button.

To make things simple, you can allow permission to 'Everyone' with 'Read'
priviledge. This can be remove after you have completed the required task.

Tom, I have had the same issues. I have about 5 computers on the network.
THey are a mixture of XP, CE for Devices, ME, Vista Business, and Vista
Ultimate. I see the same issue with my teo Vista PC's. One of them is wired
and one is wireless (Notebook).

I have enabled the proper folders for sharing to "Everyone" and I get the
access error like you do. Sometimes it takes a LONG time before that error
appears. I usually have to manually abort it.

I hope someone provides an answer that really works... my new Vista machines
are driving me crazy when I try use them with my LAN!

I made my PC the administrator, then I could connect fine. Mine has the
Vista on it, and the other PC has XP on it. Forget trying to hookup a
printer, because unless they have come out with an update on this problem
that I don't know about, A vista computer networking with a XP OS with
printer, it will not print. I can get internet ok, just cannot print
anymore, and I worked on this problem for about 2 weeks, to no avail I
finally gave up, I am looking to buy a printer for the Vista PC and be done
with it.

Hi, try using the following command in command prompt

net use <drive letter>: \\<XP Computer>\<Share Folder Name> /user:<XP
Computer>\<Existing Account>

you will then be prompted to supply the password for <Existing Account>
