My Vista won't start. x64 with service pack 1
I was defragging the hard disk when it suddenly stopped.

Rebooting windows normally and it keeps crashing once the log on screen
appears.
Tried the safe basic safe mode which loads, but the safe mode with
networking and command promopt options do not load - windows stops.
Tried the vista repair with the cd but that stops too once the 100% bar has
completed.

Chkdsk fails as well.

I haven't tried building a recover disk yet, don't know if this will help?

Either boot from the DVD, and do a System Restore to before SP1.

Or, boot into Safe Mode>Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System
Restore>take it back before SP1..

Thank's Mick.

The implication is that the service pack is faulty. I've had the service
pack running for 10 days now without problem with me booting up a least once
a day. If I do windows update for the service pack might I just get the same
problem afterwards?

I tried booting from DVD with the original disk to do a repair and get the
same crash. It's as if there is a corruption on one of the system files. I
was defragging at the time of the original error so could it be that there is
a corrupt file?

Strangely, it has booted into windows once. I could not see any events that
might point to a problem. But after shuting down and trying again I get the
crash again.

How were you doing the defrag? I had a similar problem when using Diskeeper
and someone else also reported this too. Perhaps there is a bug in SP1
relating to defragging and booting.
