Vista x64 and Media Center PC

Hello,

I tried installing Windows Vista x64 on my XP Media Center PC by using
Partition Magic. I used Partition Magic to create a new partition so that I
could install Vista x64 on the new partition. I then started my PC with the
Vista x64 disk in my DVD-Drive and boot from the Vista DVD and started the
install. When the install asked what partition I chose the new partition and
it seemed like it was going to work. When the install was finished My boot
Menu did not have Windows Vista as an option. It had "Earlier version of
Windows" and "Windows"

The earlier version of Windows was "XP Media Center" and I'm guessing the
"windows" was supposed to be the new Vista Partition but when I tried to
select the "Windows (Vista)" it gave be an error message saying that it could
not find the start_windows.exe application(I'm guessing what the actual name
of the .exe file was).

Can anyone help?

Yes, the "Windows" entry is Vista. Partition Magic does have some issues
with Vista. Some swear by it but I have seen some concerns expressed about
it also. What version did you use?

Vista does not use boot.ini. It uses a boot configuration data store to
manage booting.

I believe what your problem might be is one that I had when I first started
using Partition Magic. Without knowing for sure if this is the case, I will
explain anyways, as maybe it will help someone else...

When I created my extra partition, I screwed up and made a partition in
FRONT of the original. (i.e.: at the beginning of the drive) which was the
default setting in partition magic.

If this is the case, you need to delete that partition and, hopefully, you
haven't deleted any of the files needed to boot your original partition.

I am one of the infamous PM users. Did you create a Logical or Primary
partition? Did you use the "Install a new Operating System" Wizard? Did
you hide any partitions?

I created a Primary Partition and no I did not use the "Wizard" because I
loaded the system from boot. I did not hide any paritions I just chose the
new partition when prompted which partition I would like to install to.

At this point I am back to my original factory settings because I wiped
everything out and re-installed XP Media Center. I want to start all over
again with partitioning my hard disk to make room for Vista x64. I am aware
that Vista does not use boot.ini and instead it uses cdsm - could this be
part of the problem?

Nope that's not it. Do you mean before the FAT partition that PM uses? This
was not the case. My partion setup was FAT/NTFS/New Partition/Recovery
Partition.

Found more information (I am at work and will have to wait till I get home to
resume). I need to learn more about bcdedit.exe because I don't want to use
VistaBootPRO.

It is quite hilarious to think that ole Ted was REALLY going to give a
speech on the topic. I've met him and know that he is probably the WORST
person to have anything to do with the internet legislation. People here
really like him as a senator, but most of the people up here are fairly well
connected and just groaned as soon as he opened his mouth.

I've read this document only there is minimal information about adding Vista
to my already existing OS (XP). The explanation or breakdown of the bcds
file is vague. Know of anyplace else I might find more information on the
bcds file?
