Vista wont reconnect to internet after signal drops

just purchased new pc with vista home pro on it,
connect to internet thru usb/cable modem (motorala surfboard)
my ISP isnt the best, and occasionally the signal drops
but then comes back, when this happens
Vista never automatically reconnects. it's always a big
game of resetting the network adapter, diagnose the problem, etc etc
this is a BIG hassle. in XP this was not a problem,
the signal dropped, XP went off line, then when signal came
back, you wer back online automatically.
is there a setting or workaround to my problem?
i'm ready to toss this thing into the closet and rescue my XP system.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi
Try to uncheck the power saving feature of your computer's Network card.

However if your modem has an Ethernet output in addition to the USB. To
avoid issues like this, and add security to your system you should install a
Cable/DSL Router between your modem and computer.

let me re-phrase my prob.

the modem (cabl to usb)
sometime looses it's signal.
i can see the lighgts turn off,
and then back on again,
when this happens, the compuer remains
connected (so it says) to the modem
but not all the way to the internet.

i have to hit diagnose several times
and reset the net. adpt. and turn th emode, on and off.
it's a major pain in the you know what.
and really something as simple (to an end-user anyway)
as picking up a dropped connection shouldbe something
right up there with say, being able to install the modem
inthe first place....

any work arounds, other settings to get this vista op
to do what my old xp did blindfolded??

much aprec.

J.
