Vista won't boot

Hi all
Not sure how this has occurred but since yesterday my PC will not boot,
(vista ultimate).
Have tried all F8 options, (safe mode, last known good configuration, etc),
and have also tried booting from vista disc but result is always the same.
Error message on BSOD is:

STOP: 0x00000024 (0x001904AB, 0x88BD489C, 0x88BD45CC, 0x87ED9948F). ntfs.sys
- Addess 87ED948F base at 87EBF000, Datestamp 4764F079.

Suggestion is to run CHKDSK /F but I can't get to a comand prompt.
Quite new to computing and have still to learn how to create back up disk(s)
so I don't have one of those either.
Any help much appreciated as I desperately need to recover system/valuable
data.

Regards
Mick

0x00000024: NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM
(Click to consult the online MSDN article.)
A problem occurred within NTFS.SYS, the driver file that allows the system
to read and write to NTFS file system drives. There may be a physical
problem with the disk, or an Interrupt Request Packet (IRP) may be
corrupted. Other common causes include heavy hard drive fragmentation, heavy
file I/O, problems with some types of drive-mirroring software, or some
antivirus software. I suggest running ChkDsk or ScanDisk as a first step;
then disable all file system filters such as virus scanners, firewall
software, or backup utilities. Check the file properties of NTFS.SYS to
ensure it matches the current OS or SP version. Update all disk, tape
backup, CD-ROM, or removable device drivers to the most current versions.

If booting to the vista disk fails, it's not vista that is your problem.
Until you can boot to a recovery option, you should be looking at what
hardware it is that you need to fix,
(or how to get a working boot disk)

Stop orders beginning with 0x00000024 may be serious and you may not
be able to recover. Typically the file system (NTFS) is damaged or
corrupt. It may be as simple as running the build it repair utilities
part of Windows, but the catch 22 is to get to a command prompt or
start up in safe mode which you may no longer be able to do.

You need to change the boot sequence under BIOS so you boot from the
Windows DVD assuming you have one. It has the necessary tools to start
the system when all else fails.

Hopefully you data isn't on the root (C drive). If it isn't then the
data is probably safe and just needs to be recovered. We'll cross that
bridge later.
