Vista will not let my LAN connection work

Hi

I am not very PC literate but I have bought 2 new PC's both with Vista on. I
have one connected to the internet & the other uses a LAN connection to
access the web. Since the 2nd new PC arrived I have been unbale to get the
LAN to work. I am desperate to the point of jumping off my roof, I have
fiddled with everthing I can think of in the Network sharing centre but still
no connection, just a big red cross. I do not understand about IP adresses &
DNS servers but someone suggested I add these to both PC's in the properties
bit of the LAN field as I always get conflicting IP adresses. I have tried
obtaining IP & DNS automatically but that does not work either. Could some
kind knowledgeable sole tell me what I have to put in both these fields or my
adiction to World of Warcraft could come to an end & there only be 8,999 998
million players left online.
