I have 3 news accounts ( teranews,microsoft communities and my isp's news
account. Theres always been a momentary lag changing from one to the other
but it seems to have slowed down even more this last week.

I use maintenance options and compact regularly. My antivirus AVG is not set
to scan mail. I've not installed anything except except WUpdate and I
uninstalled the last batch to see if that was it but nothing changed. I'm up
to date with virus/spyware/malware scans.

Any ideas?

Not sure if this will speed things up, but AVG still meddles with
messages even when the email scanning is turned off.
Chances are, you installed AVG antivirus using its default install option.
If so, uninstall it, then reinstall, but select 'custom' install, which then
allows you to unselect installing its troublesome email scanning module.

While AVG is uninstalled, try Windows Mail again, just to verify that
the culprit has been found.

I've just checked and now remember that I did uninstall and reinstalled
without the email scanner some months back after reading your reply to
another poster. Sorry to have misled you. So probably not AVG then?

I've found that switching to or from teranews is especially slow - perhaps
a problem with their server instead of with your machine?

I did wonder if that was a problem as its the free version. To be honest
I'm only using it for 1 newsgroup that my isp wont carry (its an old chat
group but under alt.bin hierachy) and it takes so long to post its virtually
unusable. I will get round to subscribing to a very small block account
eventually - any recommendations?.

Meanwhile I'll uninstall the tera account and see if things improve.

Thanks for your input.

Uninstalled.

Its a bit faster going from local folders to one of the news accounts. But
switching from 1 news account to the other or going back to inbox, theres a
definate delay. It doesnt seem to matter which one is opened first, still
the same delay moving to the 2nd account.

I use their "free" server.

The other accounts where I've gotten binaries no longer carry binaries,
so no recommendations.
..

Since it's not your antivirus, I don't know what could be causing it.
I have to switch frequently between my ISP news server, three
different MS news servers, and a couple of private servers, and
have not noticed any unusual delays.

I'm beginning to wonder whether its just me being impatient. I'll have to
get the old stop watch out and time it to be sure!! Thanks for your input
anyway.

:o)

Do you post on it?? Sometimes there is several days lag before a post gets
to show on the group.
There was at first, then the lag got much less for a few months. However, I
lost my password for that account and downloaded too much in one day about
the same time as they changed their requirements for account names, and now
I'm currently unable to use the account at all.

Sending a message to help @ teranews.com (with the appropriate demunging)
only gets a automated response advising you to use a certain website, but no
usable information on which website they mean. Sending a message to
level2 @ teranews.com (with similar demunging) in order to reach a human
has, so far, gotten no response at all, even after a few days.

If you use free.teranews.com, avoid downloading all the messages from
newsgroup alt.binaries.news-server-comparison at once. Even though it's
supposed to be a text newsgroup about binary newsgroups, enough large
binaries are included to put you over your daily limit.
