I have a Dell Studio XPS. The first time I turned it on, it started
downloading a ton of updates, after which the opacity went away and the bar
turned grey. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated. Oh, I checked the
setup.ini and didn't notice any settings that addressed this issue.

It sounds like you mistakenly installed video drivers from Windows Update.
This is never a good idea. It's also a good idea to set Windows Update to
download updates and notify you before installing so you can see what you
are updating instead of just leaving it on automatic.

For the immediate problem, reinstall the video drivers. You will have
received a CD with the drivers from Dell. If you don't have this CD, get
the video drivers from Dell's tech support website for your specific model
computer.
