Vista Screen Shots not working (HP DV6000)

I have installed Vista Ultimate on an HP DV6000 laptop.

I am unable to take screen shots the Windows XP way of ctrl-PrtSc or
alt-PrtSc. The Snipping Tool that comes with Vista is useable, but I do
not see a way to use it while pulling down menus in the target application.

What I have read in the help, I gather ctrl-PrtSc and alt-Prtsc should still
work in Vista. Is it perhaps a driver/bios problem with the HP DV6000
running Vista?

The traditional commands for taking screenshots in Windows work just the
same in Vista, whether its a full desktop or foreground window. Its possible
your issue is specific to either your BIOS yes or driver with your keyboard.
Have you tried plugging it into another USB port and try taking the
screenshot again?

It is a brand new HP DV6000 laptop.

..... Aha! HP implemented it on the [fn] key!

[fn]-PrtSc instead of ctrl-PrtSc
[fn]-alt-PrtSc for the active window.

Thanks for the info to make me look elsewhere.

Stephen--

I'm not sure if you're running X86 or X64, or what build of Vista Ultimate.

Alt+print screen, ctrl + print screen and print screen are all valid in
Vista or XP to copy a screenshot for pasting.

I use alt+print screen, or sometimes print screen alone if I don't want to
take the newest window consistently. I would look for any bios updates @ HP
and any update for your Video card driver, but I tend to think they aren't
the problem. MSFT update may have the driver or the site of the vid card
chipset maker.

Try running sfc /scannow from an elevated cmd prompt and see if it replaces
a file or .dll that allows you to use the key combo.

Stephen,

Since laptop keyboards are smaller than desktop ones, they usually require
pressing a special modifier key (often called Fn) to access some functions
like Num Lock or Print Screen. Could it be your case? If yes, you'll need to
press Alt+Fn+PrnScrn to take screenshot of active window.

I should have remembered that. My MSFT keyboard needs "F/Lock" before any
key shortcuts work.

Yes. Thanks for the tip.

My Winbook (my previous laptop) didn't require the fn key.

I too own a HP, a DV8371. So thx for the advice of making screenshots. I have
a question you might be able to answer. If I play games (Half-life 2 or Fear)
my shift sometimes gets stuck, not physically but it gets locked like if
being pressed. If I press shift left or shift and mouse button, shift stays
on. It is really annoying when playing multiplayer games and the figure keeps
running left (or any direction for that matter). By typing shift and the
direction in which it is stuck it usually unlocks. Maybe it is a regular
problem but I didn't notice it that much on my other laptop. Maybe something
to do with sticky keys?
