Vista refuses to use bluetooth headset

I successfully paired my bluetooth headset with Vista. When I paired them,
Vista opened the Found New Hardware wizard and wanted to install device
drivers. No disk came with the headset, so I told Vista to search online,
and it found nothing, and told me the driver installation failed. But the
headset does show up in bluetooth devices in Vista as an audio device. In
its properties, on the services tab, are checkboxes for Handsfree Telephony
and for Headset. If either of these are checked, then Vista runs the Found
New Hardware wizard, and runs it again every time I login. And in control
panel under Sound, the headset doesn't show up as a playback or recording
device.
The headset manufacturer shouldn't have to provide any drivers anyway, since
Handsfree Telephony and Headset profiles are standard bluetooth profiles,
the same for any headset which supports them.
How do I get Vista to talk to a standard BT headset using the standard
profiles?
