Vista RC1 Dirve Letters?!

D

DHarray

hello,

my partitions in xp look like the following:

c: windows xp (installed)
d: empty
e: vista (empty yet)

then I installed Vista RC1 x86 (new install to e:) and all drive letters
changed in vista to the followings:

c: vista
d: windows xp
e: empty

any idea how to change the drive letters in vista? i want to have the
same drive letters in win vista like i have them in win xp, but vista
changed them while installing and i cannot undo that action. i tried it
with the disk management, but without success: access denied!

thanks!

Thats correct!

Each operating system has to be on the C: partition. "C is the Primary
partition"

What you see when your in Windows XP :

c: windows xp
d: empty
e: vista

What you see when your in Vista :

c: vista
d: windows xp
e: empty

Not correct. The operating system can be assigned any letter and is
dependent on how it is installed.

If you want to dual-boot, and keep your drive letters the same, start the
install from the Vista DVD from WITHIN your current OS (XP) instead of
booting FROM the DVD. Choose the 'advanced' install options to point Vista
to the correct drive/partition--do not do "Upgrade".
You cannot (easily) change the Vista assigned boot drive letter once it is
installed. Live with it how it is, or format the Vista drive/partition and
start over.

The hell it isn't people you don't know what you doing.

I have that same thing and everything's running correctly.

If you install Windows XP on C:, then install Vista on any other partition,
thats what you'll see. I have it! so why can't other people have!

Stupid people!

I had the same thing as Ted for beta one - and it worked fine - Don't worry
about the letters. I'm now running only Vista and trashed XP for disk space.

I do have a problem though. I allocated too much space to volumes D:, E:,
F: and G: and need to reclaim space to the primary C: (Vista). I've tried
everything with Vista's Disk Management, but no go. Thoughts?

Really?
Well I'll be.
Then please explain why my Vista install (bootable) is on drive "V", and is
seen by Vista, XP (on drive "C"), and every other computer on my network as
being drive "V". Something must have gone horribly wrong. Please help me
correct it.
Patiently awaiting your vast and superior multi-booting knowledge, "TED".

There are a number of partition managers (several free) which run from DOS
that can be used.

You must have done that in your setup along the way. You can have any drive
letters from C: to Z:, even on a mapped network, as long as theres a
partition to that letter or mapped networked computers having multi hard
drive partitions.

Mine :
First Computer :
C: windows XP
D: Used for drivers and installed software
E: Space for Downloaded files and Temp Directory
F: Empty
G: Vista OS
H: DVD-RW Drive 01
I: CDRW Drive 01
Second Network computer:

J: Mapped network 01 drive C:
K: Mapped network 01 drive D:
L: Mapped network 01 drive E:
M: Mapped network 01 drive F:
Third Network computer:

N: Mapped network 02 drive C:
O: Mapped network 02 drive D:
P: Mapped network 02 drive E:
Q: Mapped network 02 drive F:

I can go on if I had a 4th network computer.

True.
But sometimes to try (for the sport of it) is fun.
If only to get them to STFU, so that only 'real' answers get through to
those who may benefit and need help.

Do I know you?
;-)

Guess I'm not sporting enough. Ted should meet Rick on the XP X64 site who
insisted you could NOT have both systems on the 'C' drive.

NEW feature of Vista "STEALING DRIVE "C""
if you install by booting direct from DVD it automatically installs itself as "C".
to install and retain your drive lettering sequence, install from within another OS.

MS excuse is it looks at the bios boot sequence.

Oh. OK. So what does this mean (that you posted)?:
------
"Each operating system has to be on the C: partition. "C is the Primary
partition""
-----

Where did you get that "C is the Primary partition"?
Are you now saying you were wrong?

And what does this mean?:
"Wrong "MAX""

I love it when people who have just enough knowledge to be dangerous post
something like "this happened to me, so it must be the only way because I am
super smart".
I get a big kick out of it.
Don't you agree?

I'm through with this newsgroup people can't stop **BASHING** other people
like myself. I been around the block with VISTA and know what I'm doing with
my own stuff. I was here to help other people and I have before. NOT NO
MORE...I'm out of here!

Blame it on....JOHN BARNES AND MAX!
