Vista Product Key

Mike, I completely understand what you're saying.

From what I have read, WGA has not deactivated
any illegal KMS activated copies of Vista. It may at
some point be able to single out those that activated
against servers in China or elsewhere. But, to my knowledge,
Microsoft is rather stumped about what they can actually
do about those using the virtual KMS server.

WGA did mess up those "Frakenbuilds". But only if those
users downloaded the update. Which is actually the key
for the pirates- turn off updates. As with XP, there were
several ways for the thieves to obtain updates without going
through Microsoft.

See, I keep thinking it's really a numbers game. As I've said
and others in this group told me repeatedly- over 90% of XP's
sales came from OEM. I believe that percentage will be even
higher for Vista, simply because of the hardware requirements.
Why put so much focus on something that's such a small part
of your bottom line? Especially, since it has started to piss off
some paying customers. And, keeps adding to the complexity of the
OS code.

You really should read up on this, it is quite fascinating.
There are several places to go, one was posted here called
thehotfix.net

I am aware of the 180 day reactivation.
By adding a couple of lines to the virtual machine's
setting- a specific time and don't save changes-
the KMS server will always start up at the same time
and with the same amount of clients- I believe it's 40.
Which also makes the VMWare KMS server oblivious
to any updates that might sneak through- none of the
updates would be saved.
I may or may not have tested this. Curiosity can be
an extremely powerful force. Yes, I've heard about the cat.

You or I won't use it for ourselves, but many pirates are.

the KMS workaround will become the most popular way to illegally obtain
fully functional Windows Vista in China.
If you go to vistafans.com or go to a Chinese search engine today,
do a search on keyword "KMS" , then you see page of page threads about KMS
servers or DIY KMS.
Far more than what you saw last month.

Some of the popular Chinese PC magazines have full coverage on KMS issues.
In the future, these IT magazines may include update information on KMS
servers availability in every issue.
This is because most online KMS servers don't seems last more than 1 month.
Except, vbs.net.cn ( using random port ), run by a girl of 2x years old, who
is going to celebrate her 2 months of being a voluteer hosting the most
well-known online KMS server in China .

Anyhow, I haven't seen someone dare to host an online public KMS server in
other countries up to this moment.
But I am there will people doing that secretly and call up his friends to do
the KMS activation illegally.

people don't have to worry about anything, if online KMS servers are widely
available.

I am sure someone will write an utility that automate the activation
process,
simply double click on the exe file, select a KMS server on the screen, hit
enter, done !!

Imagine if these guys worked for Microsoft!!!

If you are going to steal- why even worry about
KMS servers in China?
The more diabolical and clever way, is to use the
virtual KMS server. That just blows my mind how
quickly that method came out. Yes, it is stealing.
But sure as hell is slick. Wrong, and yet, creative.

All the WGA and activation crap accomplished nothing, and
done before Vista even officially retails- in the blink of an eye.
Of course, KMS only works for Business and Enterprise.
For those Ultimate lovers, there's the new "never activate"
crack, good for 32bit and 64bit. They found a way to stop
signed driver enforcement in the 64 versions. Amazing.

Perhaps, the guys over at VistaBootPro (ProNetworks)
need to take a look at the tiny crack, cause they keep
saying they are "working" on a version that will disable
driver enforcement.

Microsoft sure has put a significant amount of time
and resources in *trying* to prevent an "insignificant"
part of Windows sales from being adversely affected.
They haven't accomplished a thing. Oh the irony of it all.

"fully functional" is a bit of an exageration. As soon as you start to
need Windows Update, however, you're going to run into problems.

Yes, they do. Windows Update can tell Windows to go into reduced
functionality mode if their key is not valid (though it doesn't yet do
this). Which means you can't get security updates, and the first time a
security flaw is found your system becomes compromised.

Also, anything that requires WGA to install or download will also fail,
which is becoming more and more common.

Then, you're stuck with Enterprise edition, which has no games, no media
center, etc... and you won't get ultimate extras either.

Unless you use Auto Updates instead of going to the Windows Update page
and face the Genuine Inquistion.

Gosh, no Windows Defender? How sad!

Eric, that's just not true. So far, Updates are working fine for those
activated against KMS servers in China. Microsoft hasn't quite figured
out what to do about it, yet. WGA validation wasn't built with this scenerio
in mind. WGA sees the Vista copy as legit. That may well change.
However, what Microsoft intends to do about the VMWare virtual KMS servers
is another matter. They may just have to let that one go, and hope
that the fact a pirate has to download the KMS server which is 1.5 GB
will make it prohibitive for most. The VMWare KMS server is actually
an image of Business N. There is also a gutted one out there that is
about half that size.
Yes, they do. Windows Update can tell Windows to go into reduced
functionality mode if their key is not valid (though it doesn't yet do

KMS activated versions are seen as valid.
Also, anything that requires WGA to install or download will also fail,
which is becoming more and more common.

More and more common mistakes are being made against
paying customers. Most of the ones stealing know how to cover
their ass. Some of these pirates (individuals and groups) are
quite sophisticated. They use "dummy" or test installations to see
what updates will do. It's nothing for them to throw Vista into
a virtual machine and see what impact a new update will have
before letting others know it's okay. And anyway, as they have done
with XP, there are alternative ways to get updates. Like,
http://www.shavlik.com/hfnetchkpro.aspx or they make their
own service packs. Or sites like http://windizupdate.com/
They'll figure it out for Vista, too- when/if updates stop functioning
for them.
Then, you're stuck with Enterprise edition, which has no games, no media
center, etc... and you won't get ultimate extras either.

Since the only versions of Vista that can be activated with a KMS server
are Business and Enterprise, I'm not following you. The thieves using
that method aren't being "stuck" with anything. Actually, the Games aren't
installed by default in Business, but they can be through Windows Components.
The only thing the pirates haven't gotten to work in Business or Enterprise is
Media Center. I'm sure they'll figure it out. Vista hasn't even released
for retail, and they've gotten this far.

For those that just have to have Ultimate, there's the "never activate" crack.
It basically stops the countdown clock for activation. A thief who uses this
method will always show 30 days until activation. Microsoft wanted users to
be able to install updates straight away after installing Windows, even those
who were still within the activation grace period. As for as Windows Updates
and WGA are concerned, that hacked copy of Vista is legit and within the
product activation grace period. Microsoft may have more luck with stopping
this because it is dependent on one particular file. Of course, if the thief doesn't
update, the thief will get away with, and just obtain updates elsewhere.

Contrary to popular belief, most of these forum type sites absolutely do not
allow posts/links to something infected. They are quite strict. They aren't
there to infect users or make money, they do it because they can and believe
they are actually providing a "service"- or "sticking it the man" type of thing.

I will admit I have become absolutely engrossed with this and the darker
corners of the internet. I suppose, it's the journalistic part of me. That was
my major in college and I even did a brief stint at the Charlotte Observer, until
I decided the money wasn't good enough. It may sound as though I respect/admire
these pirates. I don't. But, it's like reading a good crime novel. The way some
of these pirates work, work together, and compete against one another, well,
it is fascinating to me.

Take care,

Michael
