Just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order if
necessary to accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean
installation (delete the existing partition by pressing "D" when
prompted, then create a new one).

You can find detailed instructions here:

or here

or here http://windowsxp.mvps.org/XPClean.htm

or here http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/clean_install.htm

However, his inability to use any programs is the result of his
inexperience with Vista and lack of knowledge on how to use it. Vista
itself doesn't prevent people from using programs. I run many programs
with Vista every day, and so do millions of other people.

If he wants to revert to Windows XP, that's his choice, but it's
rather like saying "I can't figure out how to use this television set,
I'm going to go back to listening to my radio."

A better choice would be to explain his specific problems here, get
help with them, and learn how to use Vista.

A couple of things of which you should be aware... you need to check that
there are XP drivers available for your husband's new computer. The
manufacturer should be able to tell you that. (Some new computers do not
support XP drivers, hence they do not support XP out of the box.)

And... where are you going to get XP? If you think you're going to use an
existing XP CD that you have from an old PC to install XP on this new
computer, you may be surprised to find out that that's not an option.

Do you have any computer savvy friends who might come over to the house and
help? No offense intended, but from the phrasing of your question, I must
assume neither you or your husband are computer savvy, at least not to the
point of installing an OS on a computer.
