I'd love to hear about your experience with Macs. How long did you use one,
etc. Which one did you use...

I have been told by the Techncal Support group at Dell that there is a patch
being released for Vista at the end of October. Dell has already received
the patch. Has anyone else heard this from their computer manufacturers??
If this patch is going to be released, why is Microsoft keeping it such a
secret? It's true... Vista is a complete disaster. I'm still having freeze
issues. It just floors me that Microsoft has made NO EFFORT to even comment
on these problems. GOD I LOVE MACS!!!!

Helen,

Service pack 1 is nowhere near release yet and certainly it will not be
released by the end of October, more likely the first quarter of 2008. As
usual Dell are talking through the top of their heads. I'm currently using
SP1 but it is not the big deal that the release of XP SP1 was. But, if Dell
have told you that it has solved some 'specific' problems related to Dell
machines then all you can really do is wait for the service pack to be
released to Windows Update.

Just as a word of warning Service packs, like software, have a nasty habit
of quickly being pirated. If you come across a copy on the web, don't
download it. Beta software is far to buggy for general release, be patient
and wait until the 'official' copy is release by Microsoft.

If Dell was keeping it a secret, I wouldn't know about it now would I?????
It's Microsoft that's not discussing it. My problems relate to VISTA.
You're calling a PC a whopper???? Are you referring to screen size? Macs
are
far superior to PCs. Most people just can't afford them. Perhaps that's
YOUR problem.

Macs may be better (that's debatable) but they are not far superior. BTW,
the "?" key on your keyboard seems to be stuck a bit.

Thank you.

It must have also caused some 32 bit users problems, too.
I see the v2 in the file name, also.

Macs are fine machines. However, the above article is poorly
"researched" and not written very well.

"To back up my point I did a little research on the internet for people to support my claim."

That quote in the article really says it all and is indicative of many who
blog vomit all over the internet... the author of the article went looking
specifically for "people to support my claim". Think about that. How much
objectivity does that show.... not so much.

About as much objectivity as the village idiot Frank has.

Glad you prefaced your bullshit with this little gem:

At least you're a somewhat honest MVP.

Cheers.

Exactly what did Dell say about the patch?
It sounds more likely the tech gave you something to get you off the
phone.
Call Dell back and get more details, what you have given here is
impossible for anyone to comment since you gave no information.

Microsoft releases patches/updates monthly, 2nd Tuesday of each month.

"I'm still havingfreezeissues"
Post more details and someone may be able to help.

Does itfreezeand lock?
Possibly hard drive or other hardware issue.

Or does it seem to take longer than it should?
Possibly insufficient memory, many need a minimum of 1 GB RAM and
possibly 2 GB RAM.

For starters make sure you have the latest drivers.
Do not assume a new computer shipped with the latest drivers.
Have you added/installed any hardware or software?

I'm experience the same freezes in a newish (Aug 2007) Toshiba
Satellite with 2GB RAM and an AMD Turion64, running Vista Home
Premium. I turned off all of the power-saving settings for plugged-in
operation and that seemed to reduce the frequency of the freezes to
zero. At least for a few days. Then a couple of freezes within 24
hours and so far none in the past few days. There doesn't seem to be
any pattern to the freezes and the only solution is to hold down the
On/Off button for a few seconds and shuit the machine down. Upon
restart there is a DOS-looking screen which says Window Error Recovery
- Windows didn not shut down successfully . . ..

From what other posters have said it doesn't seem likely that SP1 will
address this issue if it still happens to users who have incorporated
all of the updates that Microsoft has offered. Toshiba support didn't
offer any suggestions beyond a fresh install of Vista. Since these
freezes started pretty early in this machine's history I'm not hopeful
that a full reinstall will help.

TIA for any insights or suggestions.

Contact Toshiba.
Freezes usually indicate hardware compatibility issues or possible
driver issues.
Or instead of freezing does it take a long time?

If computers overheat, they will often freeze.
A possibility with laptops when it sits on a lap or carpet.
The fan vents may be obstructed slowing air flow and causing
overheating.

Otherwise your laptop should still be in warranty, have Toshiba
resolve your issues.
Certainly do not just live with them.
