Vista passwords

My wife and I are having a bad time trying to get Outlook to remember
passwords for our families email addresses since we purchased a new computer
with Vista Home Premium.

One friend said to buy a new "Office Suite" but the version with Outlook is
EXTREMELY expensive!!! Outlook was purchased 3 years ago as a new suite
"OFFICE XP" at considerable expense and seems to be working well with Word,
Excel and Powerpoint, so I cannot see why I have to spend over $300 to get
passwords to work in Outlook when I just spent this amount to get Vista.

If I can't get it to work on the last generation of Office -XP- do I have to
go back to Windows XP again or as a nephew suggested a cheaper program called
"Open Office" - does this work on Vista. THANKYOU the Bailey Family

Ah.... Beware of nephews bearing computer advice. I could be wrong, but I
don't think Open Office has an Outlook-type product. If so, it's not readily
apparent from its description here
http://www.openoffice.org/product/index.html .

I use OO for word processing and spreadsheet and it works fine for my
purposes. I just don't know if it does email. And if it does, you'd still
run into problems, such as having old messages still in Outlook while all
your current messages would be in the other product.

You may get some answers in this newsgroup, but you might also search for a
group dedicated to Office and Outlook.

Outlook, in Office 2003 and upwards, has no problems with passwords in Vista.
From posts here, Office XP Outlook does have probs with Outlook passwords.

Office XP was a crappy, flashy Office; i don't know why you did not buy
Office 2003, if you bought Office XP only 3 years ago!

You can use open office in vista.

OutlookXP (2002) cannot remember passwords on Vista. Quit trying.

Office XP has issues with Vista, one is that Outlook will not
remember passwords and, since Office XP is no longer supported, the
bug will not be fixed.

There's a workaround for Outlook that, to me, isn't acceptable but you
could try it, enter your password info and then do not close Outlook
again, leave it open (minimized if you like) until you turn off your
computer. When you turn the computer back on you'll have to enter all
the info again, of course.

Amen! There are some places where it's less expensive, Amazon.com and
NewEgg can save you a little.

See above, it's not going to be fixed. You might remove Outlook from
the suite and use Windows Mail for email and newsgroups or obtain other
email and newsreading programs, some of which are free. I use Pegasus
Mail and Xnews, Google will find them for you as well as others.

OpenOffice is free but does not have Outlook or anything similar.

OpenOffice is more than "cheaper", it's free.

however, it does NOT contain an Outlook clone.

Thanks to all that replied - some quick replies to those who took the time:
MICK - My wife and I are happy with the "crappy" Office. We had purchased an
XP machine and both Office XP and Office 2003 were available. The XP suite
was a little cheaper AND Microsoft' marketing said it was GREAT! Both of us
being retired and in our 60's saved the $$$!!

XS11E - Thanks for your suggestion, a good one but my wife and I have
seperate accounts and she likes to log me off to browse the internet - thens
forgets and switches off - it saves greenhouse gasses (bloody global
'yawning').

FRANK SAUNDERS - I suppose we could spend over $AU330 of our budget, but we
already spent extra getting VISTA on the new PC - the only programs that
didn't transport from the older XP PC were MICROSOFT programs - WORKS and 2%
of OFFICE XP (the password bit). Even my 10 year old and 5 year old ADOBE
video editing installed perfectly.

So.... I have two alternatives to try this weekend Thunderbird 2 which I
have downloaded and opened - it looks GREAT - or go back to XP. Certainly
won't be raving about VISTA. By the way it spend a lot of time getting
updates etc etc and gathering reports - I think Microsoft have gone over the
top as big corperations go - XP, Open Office and Thunderbird 2 looks like
another way to go. Hah, might even get out my old Windows 2000 disc again,
I'm told it flys with new dual core PCs.

Thanks again for those taking the time to read & reply. Pity Microsoft don't
take into account costomer feedback - or are they too worried about sales?
