This is something for 'the guy in the shop' I'm afraid. He knows exactly
what's been done to the computer by the sound of it, and that makes a big
difference in how you go about creating the DVD.

Hi Katinka,

Is this computer a new computer ?
If not where would the copy of Vista come from for him to tell you to copy
it to a DVD ?
Did the guy in the shop supply you with a serial ( activation ) number ?
Are you a novice at using a computer ?

@ jonathan: it's HP
@ Bob:
yes it's new
yes i have an serial (activation) number
and i have no idea what novice is (english is certainly not my mother
tongue) µ
but if it means that i don't know anything about computers then you wouldn't
be exactly right, i took a small hardware class and i also had word and
excell and stuff at school plus some programming but that's about it

however i think i found out what to do
i searched everywhere for info about vista but then i went to the HP site
and they say that if something goes wrong i have to contact them and give
them the serial number and they'll send me a copy of vista

so thanks very much but i guess i don't need it anymore

HI Katinka,

I was just concerned when you said that the man at the shop said you had to
burn a copy of Vista onto a DVD-r. It just sounded a bit suspect that's all
and I only wanted to look out for your interests, That is why all the
questions.

Katinka,

HP Computers do not come with a backup disk, you have to burn it yourself -
just like on my HP notebook. You'll need one blank DVD. Then go to Start >
All Programs > Recovery Manager > Recovery Disc Creation. This tool from HP
lets you create backup of your Vista installation. In worst case scenario
you will be able to use the disc to format your PC and install Vista as if
you just got a new computer.

Hi Johnathan,

You would think in this day and age that they would supply a O/S disc for you.
What happens if by some fate of bad luck the Vista on the drive is corrupted
or even even worse the blank disc becomes corrupted without you knowing until
you have to use it in an emergency ?

Well, I can understand that, and in the past they were giving OS discs.
Toshiba and LG still give Product Recovery discs. Still, I see no problem w/
HP's decision, at least it doesn't bother me. The backup DVD you create is a
worst-care-scenario case, as HP computers have an entire partition on the
hard drive which contains the backup for the OS.

Hi Jonathan,

Although I agree with what you have said here I always feel that with
novices that even having the backup O/S on a seperate partition be a problem.
A few years back I got involved with a few systems that had that system but
unfortunately they contracted a virus that totally cleared their hard drives.
To me personally the only safe way is to supply the customer the O/S disc.

That's true, heard of such cases. I guess no choice here but to create
several backup DVDs, which might be a good thing anyway.
