Vista not picking up wireless network

Mic

Hi guys
l've just recently bought a new laptop with Vista installed on it. I've
since been trying to connect it to my wireless network, however it seems that
Vista cannot find the network. I have another laptop running on Xp and its
fine... the network is visible on Xp.
I'm currently using the ADSL2+ Modem with wireless-G router and I've already
tried updating the firmware. I have also connected the Vista laptop via LAN
to install the Windows Updates and still it cannot detect the wireless
network.
Any help will be great guys!
Thanks!

There is a switch on some laptops to turn on for wireless.
And a lot of people don't know it.

Hi Barb

In the midst of frustration I forgot to write the Brand of the router! LOL
It's a Belkin ADSL2+ Modem with wireless-G Router. Btw I'm from Australia so
I'm not sure if you guys have this older modem/router in the States. I'm
currently running it on a WPA2-TKIP security. I used to have it on WEP but I
read somewhere that WPA2 is the better option. And my new laptop is just the
Dell XPS M1330.
I'm not really good with computers but what does unbinding the IPv6 do?
As for my router set up, I think its just something with DHCP. I just let my
router deal with allocating the IPs.
Any other ideas?

Hi Mick

I've double checked this switch. My laptop is the Dell XPS M1330 and it's
picking up my neighbour's wireless but not mine! Oh btw I forgot to write the
brand of my router - it's a Belkin
Any new ideas?

Hi Charlie

Hmmm I'll double check if it's on "Broadcast SSID" tonight when I get home
from work. But I'e pretty sure it is on because my other laptop on XP can
pick up the SSID. It's just the laptop running Vista can't.
Any new ideas?

Hi Mic.
What was the answer from Belkin when you looked for a vista firmware update
for that router?

Unbinding TCP/IPv6 has solved probs connecting to the internet.
It is new technology to increase the number of available IP addresses
multi-fold.
TCP/IPv4 is 32bit, TCP/IPv6 is 128 bit.

Also, a lot of people have probs with WPA2 with Vista, and use WEP, which
is lower security.

Mick in Qld.

change the SSID that the thing shipped with to something unique but
not personal. change the channel to something it is not currently on
but pick from 1, 6, or 11.

make sure you have the latest firmware for the device.

do NOT use WEP, it is so unsafe. keep trying with WPA/WPA2.

hey guys!

Thanks heaps for the advice!!!!! It works now! I changed the channel to 1
and Vista has picked it up! But I find that strange how Vista wouldn't pick
up channel 12. hmmmm. HAHAHAHA but all is good now!
If you guys ever come down to Sydney we'll go for a beer!
