Vista/Microsoft problem sending attachment/email

I have recently bought a new pc with vista (home basic) already downloaded -
I bought windows 2007 (home/student) seperately and downloaded it.

My problem is that when I send emails from my home pc to my university
webmail account with a word doc attached - the email arrives but Iam unable
to view the doc (it seems crypted?) In fact, I have had 2 emails returned
tonight!!!

Similarly, If Iam working at home but access my uni webmail account and use
it to send emails - if I attach a word doc, or powerpoint, the recipient can
receive the mail but the attachment is just a jumble of letters, numbers,
symbols, etc.

This problem has only happened on my new pc. Absolutely no probs with xp
and older microsoft.

Sending me mad as I can't send important docs, etc, to uni!!

Any help greatly appreciated

Office 2007 has a new file format (Word docs end in .docx, Excel
spreadsheets in .xlsx, etc.). That may be the cause of your problem.

I'm only now beginning to play with Office 2007 myself (thanks to the free
trial), so I don't know too much about it. But there is an option to save
your Office docs in the "old" (Office 97 - Office 2003) mode. Perhaps you
can set that up as the default in the settings -- I'm not sure. But take the
extra step of choosing the save format and that may solve your problem.

I'm sure you meant "Office 2007" and not "windows 2007", right?

Office 2007 uses, by default, a new file format that is not backward
compatible with older versions of Office. But all is not lost. You have two
choices (and I'll use Word as an example for simplicity):

1) Always save documents in "Word 97 - 2003" format. You can do that either
a document at a time or you can set Word to default to that format for every
document you create (go to the Office orb and click on "Word Options" and
then click on "Save")

2) The people with the older versions of Office (or Word in this example)
can download a free utility from Microsoft that will automatically convert
the Word 2007 document to something they can read. Here is the link:

I don't think it is ethical for MS not to permit file transfer from ME and
other platforms to Vista. The cable should work for all systems.

This is not a Vista, ME, or any other OS version issue. This is an Office
issue.

Not sure what you mean by "cable" as no cable was mentioned in the thread.

Ethics has nothing to do with it either...it's about advancement in
technology. Making something better will sometimes exclude older ways of
doing things. Without such innovation, we would still be using DOS. To MS'
credit, they try very hard to provide some degree of backward compatibility
or format conversion. Sometimes I think they put too much energy into
backward compatibility...causing other problems. But in genreal, that's
simply how life is with technology...get used to it or don't use it.
