I just received y new Dell laptop with Vista Business installed. However,
when I have set up my new email account from a local ISP provider, I keep
been asked for my username and password when I attempt to send / receive
emails. this is so annoying.

When I eventually cancel the operation, I get the following error message:

Account: 'mail1.eircom.net', Server: 'mail1.eircom.net', Protocol: POP3,
Server Response: '-ERR authorization failed', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

My ISP provider is less than helpful here.

Can anyone help?

Thank You

Liam,

Make sure that your mail server has a user name and password set for it.
Go to Tools->Accounts, select the account for your email and click
'Properties' when the dialog opens click the 'Server' tab and make sure that
there is a username and password under 'Incoming Mail Server' you can check
the box for 'Remember password' but I wouldn't recommend it. Your isp may
require your full email address as your user name so try that as well.

Some outgoing servers require authentication to send email so you may need
to check the 'My server requires authentication' if sending email does not
work. YMMV.

If they have instructions for Outlook Express follow them.
They do:
http://support.eircom.net/SRVS/CGI-...0000000093302573&K=8145&Sxi=17&Case=obj(3265)

Make sure that for the account you just have, for example, liam and not
(e-mail address removed) - if that doesn't work add the @eircom.net

If you are sure that you have entered the correct username and
password, then you could be experiencing account corruption
caused by your antivirus program. Windows Mail is not compatible
with most McAfee and Norton security programs. Those will need
to be uninstalled, not just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

If after uninstalling your antivirus, the problem with Windows
Mail persists, delete that corrupted mail account, restart
Windows Mail, then recreate that account.
