You might ask on newsgroup microsoft.public.it.windows.vista.
You'd be more likely to find someone who can find the
instructions for hotmail.it.

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
Outlook Express and should be uninstalled. The latest version of Trend's
anti-virus seems to be causing problems too.

I've knocked off the Norton email scans but still to no avail.

When I send/recieve with no msg's in the outbox it's fine - when I
send/recieve a newly composed msg or reply to a msg they just then sit in the
outbox.
The only way I can get a msg sent is to close windows mail and then re-open
it - it then seems to send the msg's from outbox and they show delivery in
sent items.

Any ideas sirs?

It may help if you click on Tools, then Options, then Send. If there's no
check mark in the box before Send messages immediately, click on this
box, then Apply. Click on OK.

Most versions of the Norton program need to be uninstalled, not just
partly disabled, to stop them from causing problems in Windows Mail.
I don't plan to install the latest version to find out whether just turning
off email scanning is enough for it.

Norton antivirus is incompatible with Windows Mail. Disabling it
is NOT sufficient, it must be uninstalled.

If you decide to reinstall AVG, use the custom install and tell it to leave
out the part that scans email.

Norton often needs not only a regular uninstall, but a special procedure
to wipe out the traces the uninstall left behind. Sorry, I don't know
where to find this procedure.

Once a message goes to the Sent Items folder, it means that
Windows Mail received a 'success' acknowledgement from the
SMTP mail server. So, it is peculiar that your recipients are not
receiving anything from you. What happens when you send an
email to yourself?

Hi Robert,

Thanks for the imput - I've looked at the send settings and this box is
already ticked so that's not it.
In response to your thoughts of not installing the latest Norton - well,
this is a brand new notebook and it came with the latest Norton incarnation.
My advice is don't bother as just turning off the filters DOESN'T solve this!

*sigh* My quest continues.

Thanks

Tos.

Actually, further to this I've noticed that once I click send - and the mail
goes to the outbox... and just stays in the out box... outbox menu doesn't
register a number next to it to signify the amount of mails inside.
I shut Windows Mail. Then re-open it.
Outbox then shows the number of its contents.
Then click send/recieve - the email is duly sent and is shown in sent items
- BUT, outbox still shows the number next to it even though its now empty.
Shut Windows mail. Then reopen it - well, the number is now gone.

This could indicate that the flaw perhaps lies with Windows Mail rather than
any anti virus setting persay?

If it really was a flaw in Windows Mail then all users of that email
program would be having that problem.

I don't understand your reference to "turning off the filters."

To eliminate the strong possibility that Norton is the culprit,
uninstall it temporarily, then try Windows Mail again. If there is no
improvement, you can always reinstall Norton.

Hi Gary,

When I mean "turn off the filters" - I mean I deactivated the Norton email
incoming & outgoing scans.

Anyway it's now a totally moot point. I got sick of Vista mail so I loaded
Thunderbird 2 last night and I'm quite delighted to tell you that it works
absolutely perfectly!!!

Thanks

Tos

The same: missing!

No way to send anything.

I've run out of ideas then, and my only remaining suggestion is
to upgrade to the newer Windows Live Mail program. It will
automatically import all your WM accounts, settings, emails, folders,
rules, etc. Contacts may have to be imported manually, but that is
easily done.

Installed new Windows Live Mail

Nothing, the same.

Sorry to hear that switching to Windows Live Mail did not help.
It is beginning to sound more and more like a mail server issue.
The only way to narrow this problem down is to try a different
mail server. You can get a free account with Gmail:
http:\\gmail.com
then configure Gmail for POP access:
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=13273
Then add that account to your Windows Mail or Windows Live Mail:
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13276
Those instructions are for Outlook Express, but should work for the
newer mail programs also.
Then try sending from that new Gmail account.

Dear, I have an account on hotmail.it, is it good to use as the POP
access or not? I don't see any instruction on the site how to
configure mail via POP.

No, free Hotmail accounts do not have POP access.
One workaround for this would be to upgrade to Windows Live Mail,
since it does everything WM does, plus it accommodates Hotmail.
