Has anyone found an easy way to relocate all the data on another drive from
the operating system ?

I am looking for the equivelent of "mydocuments/properties move folder to
target" that was available on Win XP pro

I like to keep my data seperate so i can easily restore an image without
data loss :-)

cheers

This is just one of MANY sites I found searching with Google
on the phrase: move documents folder in Vista
It took all of about 20 seconds.

The technique referenced does not work for the (apparently) critical
folder named AppData because this folder does not show up in the list of
folders for the current user.

So my guess is if you used the referenced technique you'd end up with
user data split in 2 places, which is probably worse than the starting
situation.

Just set up folders on your other drives and direct applications to
store data there using the "save as" option that is part of just about
every application's File menu choices. I've always done that. If I can
do it for over a million files, I'm guessing anybody can.

Yes, that is what I had come to the conclusion of ....its a messy way to do
it ;-(

I also accept the 'save as' option as one way of doing it, but again it
seems inelegant for a brand new OS.

suppose its time I set up my Acronis to do auto shadowing of my data so at
least I have a copy.

I feel it is a poor OS that dosn't make it simple to keep data and apps
apart as in a disk failure, its so much easier to just swap out and re-image
a disk with the OS&apps and keep links intact to the data.

ahh well, I still have my XP Pro 64 desktop system which I use for my 3D
work, and I think I may hold off the upgrade I have sent for until I know my
way around this OS better ;-)

Nor should it -- AppData is a container for Local and Roaming (Formerly
Local Settings and Application Settings) -- You can redirect Roaming
though, I believe.
So my guess is if you used the referenced technique you'd end up with
user data split in 2 places, which is probably worse than the starting

All data stored on the "Local" is intended to be transient (for
different degrees of transient)

Yes I understand it should be transient....however, like many busy users,
the day I sort and file my data always seems to have to wait until after
that next task ;-)

that option is still avaible in windows explorer in Properties -> Path of
documents folder.
you can also find it in the start menu:
1. open the start menu
2. on the right of start menu, right click on Documents
3. Properties -> Path.
