Vista: It is what it is...

L

Lang Murphy

Well, looks like this NG is pretty much done, for me, as a forum for
assistance until RTM hits the shelves. Too many different builds floating
out in the ether. I can't answer questions about 5600 or even 5744. So I'm
done. For the present. Hitting the road for 4 weeks tomorrow, well, today
actually. Will only have access through the web reader and since that tends
to cause one to post multiple replies when one has no intention of doing
so... I will most likely be in lurk mode excepting those times when comment,
imho, is required. That said...

Vista is what it is... stick a fork in it, it's done. Could it be better?
Well, gee, of course it could be better. Just about everything in this world
could be better. My salary. Your breath. LOL.

So I'll holla at Colin Barnhorst for being the voice of reason, and I'll
holla at Chad Harris for being the opposing voice of reason and the guy with
the lengthiest helpful posts...

Whatever happens, we're all in this together; the same boat, the same
euphoria, the same pain. (Awwwwwwww, shucks... lemme wipe a tear away...
dang onions!)

And we thank YOU, L.M., for your help.

I agree that Vista is what it is, figuratively and literally (in about three
days).

I've done everything I intend to do with it, and TO it (office
productivity), and it has worked just fine for me on recent, mediocre and
even lousy hardware. I like it very much and intend to buy the Business
Edition this spring with my tax refund.

My favorite thing about Vista is the fresh and rich GUI. Having stared at
XP's Legoland-like GUI for 40 hours a week for five years, I'll upgrade just
to be able to look at something new. I also like Windows Mail and Windows
Calendar, and will be happy to finally dump Outlook.

My one disappointment is the dumbed-down backup applet that seems out of
place in an otherwise sophisticated OS. I hope Microsoft will quickly give
us an option to back up by location.

It's been fun, y'all. Thanks for the help . . . you know who you are.

Lang thanks for your great wit and your thoughtful and helpful posts. You
all have a great time on vacation seeing things that aren't cyber.

Kevin --

How's your excellent work coming with NSA, DIA, DOJ and CIA Director General
Michael D. Hayden and AG Little Al Gozales? Are you allowed to break your
NDA with those fine folks who have shredded the Constitution and tell us
about the wire tapping programs, the attempts to plant Trojans on the PCs,
the black boxes FBI installs at ISPs warning them they'll prosecute if they
devulge them and do you constantly lose sleep that the NY Times is going to
tell people that King George who is presiding over the loss of the House and
the Senate which is the only thing that really matters to him in two weeks
has trashed the Constitution in still other ways?

The burden of all the secrecy, including the secret handshakes must be
heavy on your shoulders particularly the enforcement duties of all these bad
girls and boys you continually perceive to be violating some perceived
agreement or other here. How would Redmond hold up without your valient
FYI laced admonitions that remind me of one of the Pyncheon sisters in the
House of Seven Gables? Do these still read any of those classics in school
or for you was it all GTA San Andreas throw the babe in the trunk? Because
of course she possibly could have violated some Windoz NDA or other and if
she hadn't FYI she looked like she was going to--dija see the beady eyes
darting back and forth?

What's it really like to reside in the land of the unmentionables like
Harrison Ford in the next Raiders revelling at his final destination with
the last Ark?

Tell us common peoples what it is to bask in that aura--the presure of all
those sekrut secrets for our information FOI.

Chad, Please go to the Microsoft Connect Website, and Click on Available
Connections, and tell me what you see, Just FYI. Windows Server 2003 SP2
Beta should be listed there as an Available Connection, Just FYI. I am just
being very care full not to disclose the the Latest Build Number of SP2,
Released Last Friday on Microsoft Connect, Just FYI. You might also want to
check out WWW.Neowin.Net as well, Just FYI.

Watch those FYI's, you might hurt somebody! Lets see, Windows Server 2003
SP2 Technical Beta... do you mean build 2805? Oh no, I said it! The secret
got out! Rats. I guess you can stop hiding your build now.

Kevin, not even Paul Donnelly is hiding the latest builds of Vista in his
posts. Just look at the header for his messages. A number is a number, and
it doesn't even tell you much as that.

Chad,

Thanks to you and everyone else for the kind words...

LOL! Good lord, I -wish- I were on vacation... I work from home (GA) most of
the time... vpn into "the lab" in San Diego. Gotta deadline on something that
requires my physical presence in the lab, so I'm out in SD in "nose to the
grindstone" mode to get this thing I'm working on ready for presentation in 3
weeks. It won't be completely finished in time for the presentation and it
won't be vaporware either...

Anyway... won't be getting much Vista time in the interim...

"Ahhhh'll be bhock!"

I ain't going anywhere! Just not using Vista for about 4 weeks, so... can't
offer much help. I guess most posts would be in response to the malcontents
who don't use Vista but love to dump on it. And, well, what's the point in
that?

Anywho... lurking every few days, just to see wazzup.

Well, I guess I'm either confused or misinformed. I'll assume the latter. I
was under the impression that net neutrality was about keeping ISP's from
deciding where I can go when I want to go there. Guess I need to read up.

Thanks,

unleases the bug?

Stay the Course!!!!! Lemmings off the cliffs in Indifferent Apathetic
America!

4 Wks Lang! I have retreated for some periods of time to my XP boot and
found it looks reliable in a new light. I'm trying to drill every
nanomolecule of "5840 Escrow Baby/Jim Allchin Lookin at Crossing the Bridge
Off Campus fo sure soon!" to see how many differences I can discern. I'm
using it as an excuse to really get under the Vista hood and try to find
what I didn't know was there. I'm trying to remain optimistic that there
is anything significant I can tell from other builds but...

I do gotta really like the stable fast way IE zips right along and Search
except for the Shell Breaking phenomenon that hit quite a few people 3-4
builds ago sometime prior to RC2.

A dual boot has always seemed to be helpful for making some direct feature
and functionality comparisons with XP.

Wow! New a few new wall paper changes! Alert the media Wagner Edstrom--get

Maybe there is hope for Allchin et. al to read Nick White's blog and rethink
pricing, the EULA and the Kill Switch. It would be to their advantage in
the short run and the long run. How long is it going to take Sinofsky and
Ballmer to get the tin outta their ears?

U.S. Is Said to Fail in Tracking Arms for Iraqis
By JAMES GLANZ
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/30/w...=1162270800&partner=homepage&pagewanted=print

"The American military has not properly tracked hundreds of thousands of
weapons intended for Iraqi security forces and has failed to provide spare
parts, maintenance personnel or even repair manuals for most of the weapons
given to the Iraqis, a federal report released Sunday has concluded.

The report was undertaken at the request of Senator John W. Warner, the
Virginia Republican who is the chairman of the Senate Armed Services
Committee and who recently expressed an assessment far darker than the Bush
administration's on the situation in Iraq."
