Vista intelide.sys nitemare

I will try posting this thread again. I have Windows Vista Ultimate, I
believe after I ran the Windows Cleanup tool on my C:\ drive I don't rember
all the options I selected, when I tried to restart Windows It fails, with an
error message saying "Boot Critical File
c:\windows\system32\drivers\intelide.sys is corrupt" and a message to boot
from the install disk and do a repair. My ystem is DIY, Asus P5B Premium
Vista Edition motherboard, Intel Core 2 Duo 2.40GHz cpu, 2048MD DDR2 800MHz
ram, Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB Serial ATA-300 Hard Drive. OK so I tried
booting off the Vista install dvd and select the "Repair Automtically"
option and get the message after it tries "Windows cannot Repair this
computer automatically" It seems to me a simple replace of the corruptfile
intelide.sys file should not be so hard? I then tried to select start from a
restore point but there where none, and last known success full startup
option this fails. Now I have a system with important files on it and know
way to repair it, or access it, I can't believe some thing that is not that
"messed up" to me, I can't find a solution to. I have posted this problem and
many support boards with no help. I can't believe I now have a "USELESS COPY
OF WINDOWS VISTA ULTIMATE" with ALL MY DATA & FILES I NEED, BECAUSE OF
VISTA'S MORE ENHANANCED SECURITY! I am very disappointed Microsoft does not
monitor this forum looking for such simple problems that can render Vista
USLESS! Ralph

Hi rd--

What "cleanup tool" do you mean exactly? You mean the Windows Installer
Cleanup Utility? I don't think any aspect of Windows Vista's security is in
your way here, if you're referring to UAC. You've made it clear you have a
Vista DVD.

I'd normally exercise all your F8 options, because system restore from one
of the safe modes sometimes works when one from another of the safe modes
does. But you've indicated that

1) You have no restore points to use
2) You've already tried Last Known Good Configuration from the F8 Advanced
Options menu

Here's something you haven't tried with that Vista DVD in your hand. You
haven't tried a repair install. So let's try it:

***Repair Install Steps*** (can be used for Vista) MVP Doug Knox
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

If this does not work, then I don't know what your backup status is, but at
least you have the DVD so you could reinstall Vista. I think you have a
good chance to make the Repair Install work--give it a shot.

Good luck,

I believe it was a option under properties of My Computer C: drive, one of
several tools.

When I discribe security I mean I can not copy files I need off the
unstartable system,

I have the Vista Upgrade version, to do what you ask I believe requires me
to repair upgrade from inside a running Vista, and mine will not start. The
only option is a clean install, then I will lose all I am trying to save.

The option under properties is "Disk Cleanup" on the general tab (something
different than I thought you meant but it doesn't matter).

Even if you tried to directly copy the files you think you need, they might
not get registered, so merely copying them is often not adequate.

Try doing the Repair Install using the directions from the link I gave
you(Inplace Upgrade) using your Upgrade DVD. Unless you can borrow a full
Vista DVD, you don't have a lot of options without any restore points and
it might work. To do what I asked definitely ***DOES NOT require runniing
from "inside Vista" and Doug's directions do not indicate that. Read it
again. There is also an MSKB that is the same thing, and it's linked below.

I'm sorry that you did no backing up which is always essential. I recommend
you get Acronis True Image Home and use it so that you will have an image
backup the next time. Also check that you have at least some restore points
always.

I have installed the Vista drive in my other computer as a second drive and
have searched and found the file intelide.sys the path is
(E:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\mshdc.inf_c6c2e699)
The file version 6.0.6000.16386
Is it possible to replace my corrupted file manually?
