seen suggestions on allowing users running any version rdc in system/remote
but all the remote tab shows me is remote assistance. I can see the
connection attempt on the xp pro machine in the firewall and even forwarded
the port but still no luck.
Any suggestions?

Vista Home Premium can *NOT* act as a Remote Desktop host. You need to
upgrade to Vista Ultimate, Business or Enterprise in order to have that
functionality. You might look into UltraVNC as an alternative.
