How do I choose to save an audio file in WAV format rather than WMA format ?
The drop down does not include any format but WMA.

I do not believe the WAV choice is available in that version of Vista.
You may have to resort to a different sound recording utility.

Or you can convert. See http://www.dbpoweramp.com/

Hi,

I have this problem the other way round! I have Windows Vista Home Premium.
(It's a French edition but I don't think that makes any difference. When I
first used it, the Sound Recorder only recorded in the WMA format. Now it
only records in WAV format! How can this have happened? I don't know exactly
when the change occurred. It may have been after Windows Vista was
reinstalled after an isoluble problem caused by a new version of Pinnacle
Studio or maybe more recently after I installed a hercules WebCam but this
seems unlikely. Pleas let me have your thoughts.

Are you sure that Sound Recorder once recorded directly to WMA? WMA files
are compressed and I thought that the WAV file had to be created first, by
Sound Recorder or on a commercial CD, for example, and then the WMA (or MP3)
file created from that.

The Version I have (Windows Vista édition familiale prémium) definitely used
to record WMA files. It was the only option. I've tried substituting wav with
wma in the command line you provided. The Sound recorder appeared but would
still only record in wav format. I suppose it's not a big deal but I don't
like things I don't understand!

I seem to recall seeing the the European "N" version of Vista saves in .wav
format, rather than in .wma.

(Windows Vista N only allows saving as WAV; on other editions, to force
Sound Recorder to save as WAV, the user must start Sound Recorder with the
command line "soundrecorder /file outputfile.wav".)[2]
