I'm considering ordering a laptop with Home Basic. I do some music and
watch some videos, surf a bunch through DSL, and will use it for
personal finance. Will the Basic edition serve my purposes ?? Also, can
one backup from an XP Pro machine to a Home Basic machine ??
TIA for all responses.

Vista basic can do all that..

but vista needs lots of ram cpu power and disk space...

post the specifications of the laptop se we can better advise you... Because
may be better off asking for XP pro with a low end laptop.

If Your Planning To Purchase A Computer With Only 512 MB's Of RAM, Open
Source Linux Is A Better Solution, Windows XP Needs At Least 1 GB Of RAM To
Work Well With Any Version Of Microsoft Office 2000 Or Higher, And Windows
Vista Needs At Least 2 GB's Of RAM To Work Well With Microsoft Office 2007,
Just FYI.

Thanks for the link. It answered most of my concerns.

You're welcome.
Please don't be put off by some of the other posters in this group and do
post any further question you may have here.
There are more people willing to offer real help, then those just here to
shout and rant. :-)

One thing to consider is if you ever want to use Windows Home Server (when
it becomes available) to do backups then Vista Basic will not work with it.
