Vista Home Basic-blank screen when logging on

a friend of mine has bought a toshiba laptop,it worked fine for a while until
he finds out that his laptop only shows a blank screen when he log on,i tried
to fix it via system restore but it appears again after few boots.everythings
in the system seems fine because if i execute explorer from task manager then
everything will be normal again. so i'm still figuring out what's making the
explorer fails to start by itself.

does this problem rings any bell? =P

i shall include it's startup program list as well, just in case =)
-Windows defender
-ATI Catalyst control centre
-Realtek HD Audio control panel
-Toshiba power savers
-Toshiba Flash cards
-Quicktime
-Kaspersky Internet Security
-Microsoft Office 2007 Groove Monitor utility
-Windows Sidebar
-WMPSNCFG.exe (seems like a part of WMP but didn't help when i disable it)
-Windows Live Messenger

now i'm trying to add another startup entry via registry editor and see if
it works,wish me luck ;)

If this is a new laptop, he should check with the manufacturer as this
should not be happening.
