James... couple more things come to mind after installing XP over Vista at
work.
You said you had an 'upgrade' XP install disk. Early in the XP install
process you MUST put an earlier version of Windows in the CD tray to 'prove'
you are eligible to upgrade. You said you were using a brand new computer
that shipped with Vista. So you need a work-around to get the upgrade to
work. And the product key (25 digits) must be an 'upgrade' key.
In my case I tried to use a valid 'retail' product key but used an OEM XP
install disk. This did not work. XP install told me that the numbers I
entered were wrong. (in so many words) So the product key code range of
numbers is embedded in the install CD. OEM, upgrade, retail for each version
of XP. Pro, Home, MCE.
