Vista does not burn anymore

Hi,

I have a problem with the built-in burning feature of Windows
Vista. Vista does not allow me to burn files to DVD/CD. When I insert
a blank DVD, I'm asked to prepare the DVD (Live or Mastered). Then the
DVD RW folder windows opens but I cannot drag any file into it, they
simply don't stick. I also realized that the Burn button which appears
on the toolbar in explorer doesn't have any effect. This feature used
to work fine, I burned my last DVD data about one month ago. I don't
recall any major driver update/software installation in the
meantime...

I tried to upgrade the firmware of my DVD-RW (NEC ND3540A) to the
latest official version (1.04) but it didn't help. System Restore is
not an option because I already went back to the earliest possible
restore point.

When I try to burn some music with Windows Media Player, everything
works fine.

Any suggestion?

Thank you very much.

This seems to be a common problem without a solution (yet.) I did a live
chat session with a customer service rep and we ended up creating a new
profile. After this, the burn feature worked fine. He believed that
somehow, my original profile had become corrupted. This troubleshooting took
about 2 hours. Eventually, the burning feature quite working with the new
profile. After a few more google attempts, I came across a post on the MSDN
forums under the optical drive section describing this problem. What was
really interesting is that using the command line prompt, files can by copied
just fine to the CD/DVD using old dos commands ie xcopy, copy, etc. The
microsoft guy on the forum concluded that the problem is not with the file
system or the drive system, but that it must be a problem with the explorer
shell. Since he had no experience with the shell, all he could do was pass
the information on. Bottom line, the shell interface for dragging and
dropping files to a CD/DVD is broken. As a workaround, us the command line
prompt to copy files. Hopefully, this issue will be resolved soon.

In the meantime I reinstalled my system.
Anyway, thanks very much for your reply.
