vista desktop search and windows mail search times

I'm trying to get a handle on searching in vista. My system is a relatively
decent performer (Core 2 Duo E6300, 2 GB ram, hardware raid, ...)

Here are some numbers.

Desktop Search for "control":
about 3-5 seconds an obvious things like control panel show up
about 10-15 seconds and everything has shown up (emails, etc)

Open "Windows Mail":
non-responsive for approximately 30-60 seconds when opened. I have no idea
what it's doing during this time period.

Searching my inbox:
my inbox has ~ 1500 message
Search 'From' for a nonexistent string: 30-60 seconds
Search 'Message' for a nonexistent string: 5 minutes
Winmail.exe and Svchost.exe are hogging CPU when searching, causing
sluggish performance on all processes.

Replying to an email message:
5-30 seconds from clicking 'reply' to opening of reply dialog.
svchost.exe and winmail.exe are again bogging down the pc.

The indexer settings page claims ~ 180,000 items are in the indexing
database. Most of these I suspect are deleted emails.

Are other people getting similar performance? I certainly hope there's
something wrong with my installation and Vista doesn't really perform this
bad in the average case. This performance is horrible.

Anybody???? I'd really hoped these slow times were something misconfigured on
my end... Am I to assume by the lack of response that Vista desktop search
and windows mail search are this slow for everyone????
