Vista backup not working

I have a Dell laptop and have tried to run the system backup. When it is
done it tells me "file system corruption" and and error message "disk
C: has errors" - that is all I get.

I've done a security scan, disk clean up and will move on the disk defrag
but I am at a loss. Does anyone have any suggestions?
