Vista asking for XP PC Password

T

teksonic

Wireless network set up OK and Vista can see 2 other XP PC's and they can see
and access the Vista PC.

Only problem is when accessing 1 of the XP PC's from Vista. When I try this,
a 'username/password' window pops up, and I have no idea what these are. The
other XP PC can access both ways no problem.

Any ideas?

Gloria, this works on files that are in the regular C: directory (called
DVR-Data), but not to a file that is in the program files. I am trying to
get a video surviellance program to work from a remote location. The video
server is running Vista and the remote is using XP. The XP PC needs to
access a video program file (it's called PC DVR-4-Net) in the Program files
of the Vista PC. On the XP PC I can see both files of the of the Vista PC
but I cant open the one in the program file. It gives me a message "....
access is denied" I have password required turned off on the Vista PC.

Pls help

Chris,
And Gloria or others may correct me, but I think the link she provided was
only applicable to the file sharing and the XP machine(most likely XP Pro vs
Home) requesting a username/pw when accessed from the Vista machine instead
of applicability to a remote connection from the XP Pc to a program on the
Vista machine.

Oh, I'm sorry about that! Here's the correct link:

Thank you for that Gloria. I have a workaround for the "username/password"
required problem, but its not a real solution.

My first XP PC is networked just fine and accessing files between XP and
Vista with no problems. The second XP PC is the one giving me the access
problem. My workaround was to map a network drive to the folders I want to
share, and this appears to have worked.

But I would really like to know why one XP PC is asking Vista for a
'username/password' and the other XP PC isn't.

If anyone out there knows the answer .... please let us know.

Duncan,
No expert here and just curious, and following this thread.
Is the XP Pc that asks Vista for a pw XP Pro and the other that is not
asking XP Home ?

Hi Winston, and thanks for your interest.

The 2 XP PC's are both XP Home SP2 + all the subsequent critical updates.

Thanks..I was looking for a something similar to what I saw/occurred on
another' system last month where in a home network with Vista the XP Home
did not provide a prompt prior to access where as XP Pro did. Iirc this was
how an XPH and XP Pro network functioned on first access from each other. I
did not get a chance to look at the settings...and the person kind of liked
the username/pw request.

Sorry can't add more.
