First, what is the Realtek 8185 and why do i need it. I have a brand new
laptop with vista and have been very careful about downloading any extra
software as i do not have a lot of memory. When i shut down my computer i get
a blue screen that tells me it is doing a crash dump? and then when i start
my computer i get a black screen that tells me i did not properly shut down
my computer, when windows searches for a problem it comes back as "Realtek
8185 Extensible 802.11b/g Wireless Device Driver (RTL85n86.SYS)" what is this
and how do i fix it? Please be kind as i just learned how to delete my
browsing history!

It's your wireless network card, which connects your computer to the
Internet.

Although you may find it pretty cryptic, you can get some specific
information about the crash in:

Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer
and then when i start my computer i get a black
screen that tells me i did not properly shut down my computer, when

There is a problem with the device driver for your wireless card, it might
be corrupted or simply not working very well with Vista. Try to download a
more recent driver from your computer manufacturer's support site, or
directly from Realtek (I recommend the first alternative).

When you install it, you're merely replacing the old driver, so it shouldn't
have a huge impact on your system resources.
