Vista and DVD/CD read-write-transfer speeds

Recently my CD/DVD burner write speeds have really taken a dive. The fastest
I can transfer files from CD to Desktop is 948k/sec. Burn speeds are really
slow also. I have Windows auto-updates on so my system is very up-to-date.

Turning off my anti-virus does not help.

Any ideas?

If this problem is relative to any particular windows update, does anyone
have an idea which update to uninstall?

Thanks for any help.

Had a simular problem on my XP system, sometime ago.
I found that XP had dropped the transfer mode from DMA to PIO.
I had to delete the controller and reboot the PC to correct the
issue.
It is possible that Vista has done the same to you.

Hi Doug,

Thanks for your reply.

I really don't want to do something that I shouldn't be doing and mess up my
system more than it already is so I need to ask for a little more detail on
your suggestion. Exactly what controller do I need to delete? The DVD drive
that shows in the device manager? There are several controllers listed in
the device manager and I want to make sure I whack the right one.

Or perhaps is there a setting I can tweak to switch from PIO to DMA?

I appreciate your help and as you can probably tell I'm a little green
behind the ears when it comes to tweaking Windows.

Thanks,

Mike

Turn Direct Memory Access (DMA) on or off

You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.

Direct memory access (DMA) is usually turned on by default for devices such
as hard disks and CD or DVD drives that support DMA. However, you might need
to turn on DMA manually if the device was improperly installed or if a
system error occurred.

Click to open Device Manager.‌ If you are prompted for an administrator
password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

In the left pane, click the plus sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers to
expand it.

For each icon that has the word Channel as part of its label, right-click
the icon, and then click Properties.

Click the Advanced Settings tab, and then, under Device Properties, select
or clear the Enable DMA check box.

Click OK.
